MGM Healthcare Chennai successfully treats a patient suffering with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorders using GERD-X Applicator for the first time in Tamil Nadu

MGM Healthcare, a multi-specialty quaternary care hospital in the heart of Chennai, today announced that it had successfully treated a patient suffering with Gastroesophageal reflux disease using GERD-X applicator – for the first time in Tamil Nadu. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when the valve loosens up and allows acid contents to move up into the esophagus. A multi-disciplinary team lead by Dr. Arul Prakash, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead, Department of Medical Gastroenterology & Hepatology MGM Healthcare and Dr. Tarun John George – Associate Consultant- Gastroenterology and Hepatology MGM Healthcare successfully conducted this procedure on the patient.
A 23-year-old female from Chennai was suffering from Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The patient reached out to MGM Healthcare after performing lot of research and multiple consultations with the doctors from other hospitals. The young patient was not responding to antacids and acid reducing medication and thus was suggested for GERD-X procedure (non-invasive procedure of tightening the food pipe junction under general Anaesthesia). The procedure is performed with a help of an endoscopic camera and non-absorbable suture system.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Arul Prakash, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead, Department of Medical Gastroenterology & Hepatology MGM Healthcare and Dr Tarun John George– Associate Consultant- Gastroenterology and MGM Healthcare explained “It is estimated around 30% population of India suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease. This young patient was suffering with the same problem and was not responding to antacids and acid reducing medication. We suggested the GERD-X applicator procedure to reduce the usage of medications, and this requires only a short period of hospitalization. Post evaluation of the condition of the patient, we had suggested to go for this treatment and the procedure proved to be a successful one. This technique paves way to perform more similar procedures in future thereby simplifying the time taken in treating Gastroesophageal reflux disease.
