Tamil Nadu’s First Robot-Assisted ICSI Baby Born at Dhiya Fertility Chennai

Dhiya Fertility and Maternity Center in Chennai has successfully performed Tamil Nadu’s first robot-assisted Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ROBO ICSI), resulting in the birth of a healthy baby girl to a 37-year-old woman after a nine-year infertility journey.

The patient had previously undergone two unsuccessful IUI cycles and an unsuccessful IVF treatment elsewhere. With low ovarian reserve and type 2 diabetes, the medical team at Dhiya Fertility adopted an individualized fertility treatment approach.

Dual egg collection was performed in October and November 2025, resulting in three mature eggs. All three eggs were fertilized using robot-assisted ICSI, with the resulting embryos developing to the Day-5 blastocyst stage. One Day-5 embryo was subsequently transferred on January 12, 2026. The pregnancy progressed normally, culminating in the full-term vaginal delivery of a healthy baby girl.

Robot-assisted ICSI uses a tiny, non-pneumatic mechanical gripper to stabilize the egg during sperm injection, replacing the suction-based egg-holding technique used in conventional ICSI. The technology is designed to provide greater control, stability and precision during delicate embryology procedures.

The procedure was led by Dr. Keerthana Ashwin, Director and Consultant Gynaecologist, Dhiya Fertility and Maternity Center, supported by Dr. Poovannan, Consultant Anaesthesiologist, and Ms. Sreenithya K, Senior Embryologist.

This milestone highlights the growing use of advanced reproductive technologies in fertility care and marks an important development for assisted reproductive treatment in Tamil Nadu
